A chemical peel is one of the most effective treatments for improving skin texture, tone, and clarity — but the results you achieve depend heavily on how you care for your skin in the days and weeks following treatment. Proper aftercare protects your investment and maximizes your results.
Immediately After Your Peel In the hours immediately following your chemical peel, your skin will likely feel tight, warm, and sensitive. This is completely normal. Avoid touching your face unnecessarily, and do not apply any skincare products unless specifically recommended by your practitioner.
Days 1–3: The Sensitivity Phase During the first few days, your skin will be at its most sensitive. Keep your skincare routine minimal — a gentle cleanser, a fragrance-free moisturizer, and SPF 50 are all you need. Avoid active ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, and BHAs. Do not pick, peel, or scratch your skin, even if it begins to flake.
Days 3–7: The Peeling Phase Depending on the depth of your peel, you may experience visible peeling or flaking during this phase. This is a sign that the peel is working — old, damaged skin cells are being shed to reveal the fresh, new skin beneath. Resist the urge to peel or pick, as this can cause scarring and hyperpigmentation.
Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable After a chemical peel, your new skin is significantly more vulnerable to UV damage. Wear SPF 50 every day — even on cloudy days — and reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors. Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks after your peel.
When to Resume Your Regular Routine Most patients can resume their regular skincare routine, including active ingredients, 7–14 days after a superficial peel and 2–4 weeks after a medium-depth peel. Your practitioner will give you specific guidance based on the type of peel you received.
Signs of a Problem While mild redness, flaking, and sensitivity are normal, contact our office immediately if you experience severe pain, blistering, signs of infection, or prolonged redness beyond 7 days.
Following these guidelines will help you get the most out of your chemical peel and protect your skin during the healing process. If you have any questions about your aftercare, don't hesitate to call us.
