Dermal Fillers 101: Types, Areas, and What to Expect

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in the world — and for good reason. They can restore lost volume, smooth deep lines, enhance facial contours, and create a more youthful, refreshed appearance — all without surgery, in as little as 30 minutes.

How Dermal Fillers Work Most modern dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA) — a naturally occurring substance in the body that attracts and retains water. When injected into the skin or underlying tissue, HA fillers add volume, smooth lines, and hydrate the treated area. Because HA is naturally present in the body, allergic reactions are extremely rare.

Types of Dermal Fillers Different fillers are formulated with different consistencies and are designed for different treatment areas. Thin, soft fillers (like Juvederm Volbella) are ideal for delicate areas like the lips and under-eyes. Medium-density fillers (like Juvederm Ultra XC) work well for nasolabial folds and lip augmentation. Thicker, more robust fillers (like Juvederm Voluma) are designed for deeper injection to restore cheek volume and jawline definition.

Common Treatment Areas Dermal fillers can be used throughout the face and beyond. Common treatment areas include cheeks and midface, nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines, lips (augmentation and definition), under-eyes (tear troughs), jawline and chin, temples, and hands.

What to Expect Most filler treatments take 30–60 minutes, including consultation and treatment. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand, and most fillers contain lidocaine to minimize discomfort during injection. Results are immediate — you'll see a difference right away, with final results visible once any mild swelling subsides (typically 1–2 weeks).

How Long Do Fillers Last? Results vary by product and treatment area. Most HA fillers last 6–18 months. Cheek fillers tend to last longer (12–18 months) than lip fillers (6–9 months). Maintenance treatments are recommended to sustain results.

Choosing the Right Injector The most important factor in dermal filler treatment is the skill and experience of your injector. Fillers placed incorrectly can cause asymmetry, lumps, or — in rare cases — serious complications. At LK Beauty Med Spa, all injectable treatments are performed by our experienced medical team.
